Apple, the tech giant, is going to launch the Apple iPhone 8 this year and according to the reports and two industry sources, it will sport an advanced OLED display. On the other hand, other two models – iPhone 7s and 7s Plus are expected to launch with LED displays. Besides this, the source also claims that the company will introduce OLED displays in iPhone series from 2018.
As per a report by Nikkei, Apple has already started the designing of new phones. It also claims that the company will ship around 90 million new phones and amongst them, the half would be the iPhone 8. Since 2010, Samsung has released OLED-featured smartphone first and hence, the industry has given preference to the OLED panels all of a sudden. In this continuation, numerous Chinese smartphone vendors are releasing OLED-based handsets in the recent years.
Samsung has dominated the market to offer OLED smartphone displays globally. For Apple, it will also be the sole supplier of screen for the handset this year. The company said that it is expected that OLED business will increase revenue this year. In a statement, the South Korean conglomerate told that Samsung display is analyzing plans in order to establish a new manufacturing site in South Korea by the year 2018.
According to Kim Chul-joong, Mirae Asset Daewoo analyst, it expects to increase the investments in OLED panels in a significant manner by expanding the production lines at building new A4 and A5 plants and existing A3 plants. He also told that the company will also expand the production capacity of OLED panels till 135,000 per month by the fourth quarter. For this, the company will add new lines in its A3 factory. The A4 factory of the company will produce more new panels by 3rd quarter of 2018.
The sources also indicate that the iPhone with LCD versions will be sold by early 2019. It talks that the Apple iPhone 8 will not have the iconic home button and include a high screen-to-body ratio. Plus, this phone will come with a bezel-less display. However, the concept of iPhone 8 with OLED display is not new. It is considered as the iconic product from the company on its 10th anniversary. It will drive higher revenue for the company.
It is also said that this all-new phone will also have a 3D module for face recognition. This feature will make sure that it can be unlocked through a user’s face. The key to this new feature will be accuracy. The user can easily unlock the handset, even if it is lying flat on the surface.
The sources of Nikkei also say that Apple’s supply partners can make enough OLED units for one model this year. But it is believed that it may increase yields in 2018 to enable the company to introduce this technology in three phones from the next year.
Nevertheless, the company has not commented itself about its future plans and it will implement OLED in the future smartphones. Also, it didn’t give any response to an email which is seeking comments on this matter. But it is rumored that it will release an iPhone having an OLED display. But it is unknown when it will exactly launch.
The report says that Apple is considering to invest in two to three trillion won in LG Display to assist for strengthening the production and development of OLED panels. In earlier times, the market watchers have suggested that the tech giant Apple was expected to assist increase OLED capabilities of LG display.
